Belmont County Board of Elections Certifies Election Results

Members of the Belmont County Board of Elections certified the results of the May 8 primary election Monday.

Director William Shubat said the board certified the results and that there were no abnormalities with the primary election. He noted that voter turnout in the county was a little lighter than the board would have liked, but he said that isn’t unusual for a primary election.

“In the primaries anymore, people don’t want to declare their politics,” Shubat said. “They just want to wait for the general.”

Shubat said the May 8 election had voter turnout of 20.4 percent, as compared to 13 percent for the primary in 2014. He added that turnout usually increases for the November general election.

No recounts were required after the primary, according to Shubat. There was one tie vote in Flushing Township regarding an additional levy for road and bridge repair. Shubat said that, in that case, there was no need for a recount because issues need a majority vote to pass.

Some of the races on the primary ballot in Belmont County included a race for a county commission seat, county auditor, along with state-level races for governor, attorney general, auditor and secretary of state.
