Man Jailed For Threats To Police in Mozart

A Wheeling man sits behind bars after allegedly making threats to police during an investigation into a domestic disturbance earlier this week.

At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, West Virginia State Police troopers and Marshall County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a disturbance on Ellen Lane in the Mozart area. According to his wife, to whom police spoke at the scene, Brad J. Costain, 35, of Wheeling, allegedly returned home in a bad mood. When subsequent shouting and destructive behavior allegedly made his children cry, they fled the house to the neighbors’ residence. The neighbor called police. Police said that before they arrived, Costain had gotten into an argument with the neighbors and allegedly pulled a knife.

After arriving at the scene, police were allegedly told by Costain to stay out of his house, and after gathering information, placed him under arrest for domestic assault. During his arrest, Costain reportedly threatened to kill the officers involved.

While Costain was being arrested, according to a report, officers said they detected the smell of marijuana from inside the residence, where they said they found 51 grams of marijuana in separate plastic bags, as well as a scale and other paraphernalia.

Later that day, Costain’s wife again contacted officers that he told her he intended to point his pellet gun at police. She told police that Costain allegedly told her it would be her fault if he was killed by police as a result.

Costain faces felony charges of threats of terrorist acts and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, both felonies, and misdemeanor domestic assault. He remains lodged at the Northern Regional Jail on Friday in lieu of $15,000 bond until his hearing June 22 before Magistrate Dave McLaughlin.
