Major Water Project Nears Completion in Weirton

The finishing touches are being made on a long-term water project in the city.

During Thursday’s meeting of the Weirton Area Water Board, Steve Hamit of Thrasher Engineering said contractors have completed all but a few final touches and tests for the project. A leak test remains.

“Once that’s complete, Thrasher will have a walk-through with the water board and James White,” Hamit said.

James White Construction and Alex Paris Construction have been handling the work for the project. The project is designed to prevent widespread water outages in the city and surrounding areas similar to the events that occurred in 2011.

Hamit also said James White Construction has completed the testing batch of the water board’s new radio read meter system.

“It was able to produce the bills that were acceptable,” he said.

Assistant Director Sam Stoneking said there had been some issues with the transmission of data to the board’s billing system, but that has been addressed. A payment issue with the billing as part of the testing also was corrected.

Stoneking said crews from James White Construction will resume the installation of new meters.

“They’ll be starting back on meter installs Monday,” Stoneking said.

In other business, the Weirton Area Water Board:

∫ Approved a resolution for its workers’ compensation contract, which will be with Erie Insurance at a cost of $22,356.

∫ Approved changes to clarify areas of the employee handbook, with board members Rocky Bragg and Ronnie Jones appointed by Chairman Jim Shockley to study the handbook for possible future updates. In particular, a discussion was held Thursday about changes to the board’s residency requirement.

∫ Approved the slate of officers for the fiscal year, with Shockley remaining as chairman; Don Gianni Jr. as vice chairman; Sonny Marino as treasurer and Stoneking as secretary.

∫ Set its next meeting for noon Aug. 16.
