MENGEU

Master Chief Petty Officer Brian Mengeu, of Wheeling, recently was honored at Motts Military Museum in Groveport, Ohio, after 30 years with the U.S. Navy.

Mengeu, son of Bob and Pattie Mengeu, of Wheeling, enlisted in the Navy in March 1988 as a fireman recruit. After completing basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois and Damage Control “A” school, Mengeu reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln in Newport News, Virginia. He was part of the nucleus crew for pre-commissioning work, becoming a Plankowner.

During his tour, Mengeu served in Operation Desert Storm/Shield and Operation Fiery Vigil, where dependents were evacuated from Subic Bay, Philippines, because of the Mount Pinatubo eruption. He served aboard until July 1992.

Affiliated with the Naval Reserves, Mengeu served with NR Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Norfolk 2805 from 1992-1995, attached to Naval and Marine Corps Reserved Center, Moundsville. During his tenure, he served aboard the USS Boulder LST-1190 and cross rated to Hull Maintenance Technician. He then transferred to NR AD-31 USS Yellowstone from 1995-98.

During Mengeu’s various following assignments in Japan; Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard; Point Loma, California; Norfolk, Virginia; Pittsburgh; and Columbus, Mengeu earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Point Park University. He was selected the 2000 Sailor of the Year from the Moundsville Reserve Center.

In his civilian career, Mengeu is employed at site general manager for one of Turf Care Supply Corp.’s manufacturing facilities. He and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Olivia and Alyssa.
