Pethtel, Kelly Receive House of Delegate Wins

Delegate Dave Pethtel, an incumbent Democrat, has retained his seat on the West Virginia House of Delegates District 5.

Meanwhile, David Kelly, current Tyler County commissioner, will take control of the House District 6 seat.

Pethtel, in his race, defeated Phillip Wiley thanks to 3,073 votes cast in his favor, compared to 2,159 for Republican Wiley.

In the District 6 race, Kelly, a Republican, acquired 3,413 votes. Democrat T. Chris Combs received 1,261 votes. J. Scott Beaver, an Independent, received 412 votes.

The vote totals were unofficial Tuesday night.

“I believe I have run a fair and honest campaign,” said Pethtel of his victory. “I have served the citizens in the house for 26 years. They have put me back in each time for a reason. I always listen to them and give them an honest answer. I stood beside my constituents during the teachers strike, and I continue to stand beside them.”

Pethtel noted the large voter turnout, stating “That’s something I like, win or lose.”

“My job is to serve the needs of my district and to answer all phone calls or get back with people as soon as possible. I support good-paying jobs and fixing our roads and infrastructure. I believe I have proven that throughout the years.”

“I want to thank everyone who voted for me, and if I can be of any assistance, please call me.”

Pethel was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1988 and served continuously until 1994. He was elected once again in 1998 and has served continuously until the present time. Pethtel serves as Assistant Minority Whip, Minority Chairman of Pensions and Retirement, Minority Chairman of Committee on Energy, Senior Citizens Issues and Finance.

Kelly entered the arena of public service in 1981 as a Correctional Officer at the Pleasants County Jail, and in 1983 he was hired as a deputy sheriff. In 1988, he ran a successful campaign and was elected to the Office of Sheriff, serving two consecutive terms.

Following his terms as sheriff, Kelly returned to private sector as an investigator, began pastoring a local church and received his doctorate.

In 2012, he returned to the public sector as a Criminal Investigator for the Tyler County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, serving the county in this capacity until 2017 when he was appointed to the Tyler County Commission.

“I look forward to representing the fine people of District 6, and I appreciate their support in this election,” said David Kelly of his victory. istrict 5 covers Wetzel County and two precincts of Monongalia County. District 6 covers Tyler and Doddridge counties and the northern-most precinct in Pleasants County.
