Police Chase in Cameron Leads to Litany of Charges

A Cameron man faces 20 charges after a car chase earlier in the month led to his arrest.

Nathan Anderson, 21, of Cameron, allegedly led police on a high-speed chase across Marshall County while weaving through traffic and around emergency vehicles to do so.

Around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3, Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies were informed that a reckless driver was driving down Roberts Ridge Road on the wrong side of the road. He allegedly had several children in the car. Near Teletech Drive in Moundsville, police spotted a vehicle waiting at a light that matched the description they’d been given.

When police attempted to pull over the car, Anderson allegedly weaved through traffic to evade them. He drove into oncoming traffic to pass vehicles on the left. Police said he approached 60 mph moving through Moundsville, and approached 85 mph as he turned onto 12th Street near the Marshall County Fairgrounds. The chase continued onto Fork Ridge Road.

Police said Anderson was driving fast enough to catch up to an ambulance, which was on its way to an emergency, with its lights and siren on. Anderson allegedly passed it in a no-passing zone at speeds approaching 100 mph on the hilly, two-lane road, while taking turns in the opposing lane. Police said Anderson allegedly then lost control and struck a hillside before driving off with a damaged bumper and nearly striking another vehicle head on. Then, police said, Anderson took a turn took quickly and veered into a field near Knights Farm Supply.

But the chase didn’t end there. Police followed Anderson through the field, and over a fence, before both emerged on U.S. 250. The chase allegedly continued, with Anderson nearly striking a tractor-trailer while passing another vehicle. On a sharp turn on Irish Ridge Road, Anderson failed to make a turn and went off the road. This time, he flipped his vehicle several times before it came to rest upright.

Police said two people, a man and a juvenile, emerged from the passenger side of the car and identified the driver as Anderson, who had fled the scene. Anderson was arrested a few days later.

The vehicle in which Anderson allegedly fled was said to have license plates matching another vehicle, and a subsequent search allegedly turned up several pills of Xanax in the trunk.

Anderson faces two counts of fleeing from an officer while causing bodily injury and fleeing from an officer with reckless indifference, which are felonies. He also was charged with fleeing with property damage, fleeing on foot, two counts crashes involving death or personal injury, failure to notify, speeding, failure to maintain control, reckless driving, lack of registration, improper registration, destruction of property, overtaking on the left, overtaking in a no-passing zone, left turn on a two-way road, failure to stop at a highway and possession of a controlled substance — all misdemeanors.

Anderson posted $20,000 bond from the Northern Regional Jail while awaiting his Dec. 7 preliminary hearing.

One of the two passengers, Skyler Stanley, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken to the Northern Regional Jail as well. The juvenile passenger was taken to WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital to be medically cleared.
