Volunteers Rebuild Collapsed Bridge in Glen Dale

Crews from Mennonite Disaster Service work in the wet weather Thursday morning to set beams for a new bridge to span Little Grave Creek in Glen Dale. The former bridge, which partially collapsed after heavy rains in the spring, connected the homes of eight families to the main road that ran past St. Jude Park. Residents had needed to drive over a concrete pad — which was still in use during the Thursday rains — to get to their homes. Crew Leader Wendell Lantz said the volunteer workers were brought on through the West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, which came out in force to assist in reconstruction after last year’s flooding and the subsequent needs of the communities. Concrete for the bridge was poured Wednesday, with beams beginning to be installed Thursday afternoon. Work is expected to be completed next week.
