It’s a merrier Christmas this year for 10 area charities as officers with Ohio Valley Street Survivors Car Club presented a $500 check to each during a ceremony Friday at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center.

Club President Bill Sandiford said the club was more prosperous in its fundraising efforts in 2018, so members decided to donate to the charities. He said the club holds various fundraising car cruises throughout the year, but its biggest fundraiser is the Oglebay Good Zoo Benefit Car Show held at Site One near the zoo on the last weekend in August. He said public admission fees benefit the zoo from the August fundraiser, but the club raises additional funds through sponsorships and car entry fees.

“We had a good year financially. We had a summer long 50/50 and raised over a $1,000 for the club,” Sandiford said.

He said the club members believe the Christmas season is a good time to give back to the community.

“This year we were very fortunate, so we were able to give $5,000 away,” Sandiford said.

In addition to Easter Seals, other charities receiving a $500 check included: Bridgeport Christian Fellowship Food Pantry, Winter Freeze Shelter, Catholic Charities WV, Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, WATCH, Thomas Jeep Freedom Tree for Veterans, The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, A Special Wish Foundation and the Augusta Levy Learning Center. The club also donated $1,000 in toys to the House of the Carpenter to distribute to families in need over the holiday season.

Bethlehem Apostolic Temple pastor, the Rev. Darrell Cummings said the donation came at a great time as the temple prepares for its annual Christmas food giveaway.

“This is a great help with our Christmas giveaway. … We can feed more people for Christmas and clothe more people and give more toys,” he said.

WATCH Manager Lynn Wallace said the funds will go into its general fund that will directly benefit WATCH clients.

“All of this goes back into what we can do for them and what we can get for them,” she said.
