Wheeling Police Department Extends Deadline for ‘Explorers’ Program

The Wheeling Police Department has extended the deadline for teens to apply to its Police Explorers Program, and applicants don’t have to live in Wheeling.

Wheeling Police Sgt. Josh Sanders said the department has eight applicants so far to the program, and they would like to double that amount.

The deadline to apply has been extended through Dec. 21, with the program starting sometime in January.

Sanders said among the applicants are residents of Marshall and Brooke counties and Bridgeport, as the program now is accepting aspiring Police Explorers from outside Wheeling.

“It’s open to anybody with an interest in law enforcement,” he said. “This is a great time to get an inside view for a future career, and hands on training.”

The Police Explorer Program is a volunteer program designed to give insight into law enforcement careers for young men and women ages 14-20 through hands-on activities.

Wheeling police officers will work with the youths and provide training and supervision.

The Police Explorer instruction is based on the training provided by an actual police training academy. The youths will be issued uniforms, and be required to do at least one four-hour ride-along with an officer each month.

Eligible youths must maintain a grade point average of a 2.0 for all courses taken in school, and those enrolled in college must complete at least six credit hours per semester.

Those wanting more information on the program should contact Sanders at 304-234-6434 or jsanders@wheelingwv.gov.
