Marshall County Board of Education To Discuss Superintendent’s Contract

The employment contract for Jeffrey Crook, superintendent of Marshall County Schools, is up for renewal, a matter which will be addressed at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Crook was hired in 2017 after the retirement of former superintendent Michael Hince on a two-year contract, which expires in June. The Board of Education will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. to review his progress so far and decide whether or not to renew the contract.

Board member Brenda Coffield said she was not able to discuss the matter of the renewal, nor her thoughts on how she may vote.

“We can’t really make that decision,” she said. “We’ll be going into executive session to review his evaluation and then we make the decision there.”

Board president John Miller agreed, saying that he did not want to violate confidentiality by discussing personnel matters prior to the meeting.

Crook, who previously served as the superintendent in Hampshire County in the eastern panhandle, has since been vocal in local discussions, notably at a December town hall meeting regarding the condition of the roads in Marshall County. While Crook was among those called to answer questions from the audience, he also drew applause by addressing his fellow speakers as a resident. Crook called on state lawmakers to take more serious action to repair the roads before a student was hurt as a result of road slips making bus travel unsafe.

“I’m picturing a bus going down, stops at the ‘alternate traffic’ stop sign, and when the bus goes, that (road) collapses into the river and hurts our kids,” Crook had said at the meeting.

Crook did not return calls seeking comment on his experience with the school district.

The board of education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the board office on Fourth Street in Moundsville.
