Woodsdale Elementary School Students’ ‘Souper’ Bowls up for Auction

Photo by Joselyn King Woodsdale Elementary School student council members embrace the motto, “Believe there is good in the world.” The student council members crafted soup bowls at the Stifel Fine Arts Center Monday that will be auctioned off next month to benefit the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling.

Woodsdale Elementary School student council members strive to “be the good” that impacts their community, and their latest project partners them with Oglebay Institute and the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling.

Most students wore shirts stating, “Believe there is good in the world,” as they turned out to the Stifel Fine Arts Center after school Monday to craft soup bowls. These “souper bowls” will be auctioned off next month with proceeds benefiting the House of the Carpenter.

It is the third year Woodsdale Elementary Schools Student Council members have participated in the souper bowl auction. There were 29 students who created bowls.

Teachers and council co-sponsors Ellen Culler and Kim Ueltschy accompanied the students, who worked under the direction of Rick Morgan, director of the Stifel Center.

Morgan said he plans to contribute about 50 bowls he has completed to the auction, in addition to the 30 crafted by the students. Adult pottery students at the Stifel Center also are crafting soup bowls and will donate 20 to the auction, setting the total of bowls in the auction at 100.

The student bowls, however, have been the first to sell at the auction the last two years, according to Morgan.

Morgan said the soup bowl projects give students a chance to give back to the community by using their creative skills.

“It would be tough to find them a more productive thing to do,” he said. “It’s a nice fit for them.”

Culler said the student council members are always seeking out things to do more the community. This past holiday season saw them go caroling in the Woodsdale neighborhood, and also sing to residents at the Peterson Rehabilitation Center.

They have made blankets for the homeless, and this year the students plan to take on projects involving local animal shelters.
