Wheeling Heritage Taking Applications for “Show of Hands”
Entrepeneurs with business ideas for Wheeling will have the opportunity to present their plans at Wheeling Heritage’s next Show of Hands event in May.
Through May 1, Wheeling Heritage is accepting applications for its “community-supported, crowd-funding” event that provides money for potential businesses and projects in the city.
Applications can be found online at wheelingheritage.org/show-of-hands, and the event is set for May 22 at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Wheeling Artisan Center, 1400 Main St.
“At the event, four presenters explain their ideas to community members in attendance,” according to a press release from Wheeling Heritage. “Attendees vote on their favorite, and the presenter who receives the most votes receives $3,000, plus door donations, to put towards the project.”
So far, Show of Hands has given more than $58,000 to support small businesses and projects in the city.
The online application asks for a project description, a detailed budget and information on how the idea would benefit Wheeling. A Wheeling Heritage committee will then review the applications and select four to move onto the presentation round.
Previously, the event awarded $5,390 to Clientele Art Studio, a new art gallery and studio space in East Wheeling, at the Show of Hands in January.
Before that, Show of Hands awarded $5,214 to Attention to Detail, a car-detailing shop that recently expanded and relocated to Wheeling Island at its September event.
The program is sponsored by the Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe law firm, which donates $1,000 for each event. Community members and business owners dubbed The Friends of Show of Hands contribute $250 to each event as well.
Friends of Show of Hands include Dave and Beth Weaver of Wheeling Volkswagen and Subaru, Dan Joseph of Joseph Orthodontics, Brian Joseph of Touchstone Research Laboratory, Fuzz and Barb LaRue, H. Lawrence Jones, Ed. D., Kennen and Kennen Realtors, Warwood Armature and Rabbi Joshua Lief and Rebecca Lief.
