5-Year-Old Riding Bicycle Dies After Being Struck by Driver of SUV in Bloomingdale

Hannah R. O’Leary, 5, of Piqua died Wednesday evening after a vehicle struck her bicycle at Catholic Familyland on county Road 36, Bloomingdale, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department reported.

A deputy reported a 17-year-old male was driving a SUV through a field looking for a place to park the vehicle.

The driver told the deputy he stopped because there were too many people in front of him.

He said he looked behind him and didn’t see anybody, a deputy reported. The driver said he put the vehicle into reverse and heard a sound, according to the sheriff’s department. The driver said he saw people running toward the vehicle.

A deputy reported the driver said he got out of the vehicle and saw that he had struck a child on a bicycle.

Witnesses told deputies they saw the tires of the vehicle go over the child.

Unionport Emergency Medical Services responded and provided treatment until a STAT MedEvac helicopter arrived. The child was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The hospital informed the sheriff’s department that O’Leary had died at 9:13 p.m. Wednesday.

The teen driver was taken to Trinity Medical Center West because he was in shock, a deputy said.

Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the incident was an accident.
