911 Service in Woodsdale Interrupted by Downed Line

A downed phone line in Follansbee interrupted phone and 911 service to more than 3,000 Wheeling residents Monday afternoon.

According to Wheeling-Ohio County Director of Emergency Management Lou Vargo, a shorn utility pole in Follansbee resulted in a disruption of service to 3,200 Woodsdale residents. Service was restored after 8 p.m.

Vargo said the agency was informed by Frontier Communications of the outage around mid-day.

“One of their poles in Follansbee has been sheared off, they have a crew working up there on it now,” Vargo said at 3 p.m. Monday. “For some reason, it’s affected some of their customers in the Woodsdale area. … They have a full crew up there working on it now, but they never gave us a restoration time.”

Vargo said outages like this were rare, but hoped that it would be resolved soon. While service was interrupted, Vargo was advising residents call the 911 center’s non-emergency line and identify themselves to the dispatcher.

“We notified all the TVs and radio stations, had them put notices up to call one of our lines, that rings directly to our 911 center,” he said. “It’s very rare, but as soon as we find out about it, that’s our plan, to get these lines open.”
