East Wheeling Murder Victim Identified
WHEELING — Wheeling police have identified the victim of a fatal East Wheeling shooting that occurred Friday as Fredrick Douglas Gilmore III of New Castle, Pa.
Gilmore, an 18-year-old black man, was found by officers on the second floor of a residence at 195 15th St. after someone called 911 to report a shooting had taken place. Police discovered Gilmore had been shot and called Wheeling Fire Department to transport him to Wheeling Hospital, where he later died.
A resident of East Wheeling said he is tired of violence in the neighborhood following Gilmore’s murder last week and reports of shots fired Tuesday night on Lane 13.
Officers from the Wheeling Police Department, Ohio County Sheriff’s Department and the West Virginia State Police responded Tuesday to a report of shots fired on Lane 13, an alley behind the 16th Street Convenient Food Mart and the Social Security Building.
Ohio County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Pat Butler said officers responded to the area around 8:30 p.m. after a deputy transporting an arrested subject on 16th Street was approached by man who said someone had fired shots at him. The man was not injured.
Butler said officers then responded and retrieved a gun from a nearby home.
No report was available this morning at the Wheeling Police Department regarding the incident. Chief Kevin Gessler was unavailable for comment.
A neighborhood resident today said he does not understand what is happening in East Wheeling.
‘‘We had a person shot and killed last week and last night I came home to find at least 10 to 12 officers in the alley because someone heard shots. I think we need to know what is going on,’’ commented the man, who asked to remain anonymous.
