Only One New Year Baby Born in Valley
STEUBENVILLE — The first baby to be born in the Ohio Valley in 2008 is his mother’s first child, and the only baby to be born New Year’s Day in the local area.
New mother Sarah Hudson gave birth to son James at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Health System in Steubenville. He weighed 6-pounds, 6-ounces, and is 19.5 inches long.
Hudson said she is a resident of the Steubenville area, and she is an employee of the Pizza Hut in Wellsburg.
Despite the fact it was her first pregnancy, Hudson was in labor just three and a half hours prior to giving birth. Mothers present in the maternity ward expressed some amount of envy.
”He was my first child, and he is a little angel,” said Hudson, shortly after nursing him Tuesday afternoon.
Both mother and child were in good health and good spirits just 12 hours after the birth.
”I had an epidural, so I did not feel much of anything,” Hudson said. ”I’m cramping a little, but I feel so much better than I did before.”
In New Year’s custom, the first baby of the year is symbolic as the start of a new year, or a new life.
Nurses at Trinity had a special hat with a crown upon it for the new boy to wear. Workers also had purchased a little crown for a girl if the infant had been a female.
