WEST LIBERTY – An argument between roommates escalated to violence early Friday, sending one West Liberty State College student to a local hospital.

Gym equipment was used in the alleged assault, a college official said Friday.

West Liberty State College Communications Director Steve Cohen said a student is suspended pending charges after he allegedly hit his roommate with a barbell in their Beta Hall dorm room.

Cohen said he was told the victim of the alleged attack was treated at a Wheeling hospital, but he does not know the full extent of his injuries. The communications director said he believes the student suffered injuries to one of his ears.

West Liberty State College Campus Security is handling the investigation. Cohen said he did not know the age of the students involved in the conflict. He also did not know if there were any witnesses to the clash, but school officials are working to determine what action will be taken.

The fight follows Nicholas Nugent, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., turning himself in Thursday on allegations he stabbed another student Oct. 29.
