Man Shot on Wheeling Island
WHEELING – Police continue to investigate following an early morning shooting today on Wheeling Island that sent one man to the hospital with a bullet wound.
Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said officers responded to shots fired in the area of North Huron and Indiana streets shortly after 1:30 a.m. to find one male who had suffered a single gunshot wound to his arm. Wheeling Fire Department emergency personnel transported the victim to Ohio Valley Medical Center, where Schwertfeger said he was treated for his non life-threatening injury.
The victim was the only person on the scene when officers arrived, but Schwertfeger said multiple individuals witnessed the shooting and police have descriptions of two suspects.
Schwertfeger described the first suspect as a black male around 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build who was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect is a very light skinned black male with a thin build who was last seen wearing a red T-shirt.
The victim and the suspects are possibly acquaintances, Schwertfeger said, and may have been engaged in an altercation during which the first suspect pulled a weapon and fired at the victim.
Officers recovered multiple spent shell casings at the scene, one of which went through a window at the nearby Abbey’s Gaming Parlor. Schwertfeger said he does not know if anyone was inside the business at the time of the shooting.
Investigators are continuing to identify and interview witnesses, Schwertfeger said, as well as review video surveillance from nearby businesses.
