Three Dead in Two Crashes in Ohio County

TRIADELPHIA – Three people died as the result of two separate vehicle crashes in Ohio County within a 13-hour period between Sunday and today.

According to Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler, one woman died from injuries received around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on McCutcheon Road and a second woman remains in critical condition. In that crash, a vehicle driven by John Hatfield reportedly crashed into the back of the women’s vehicle. Hatfield was arrested and charged with DUI with injury and DUI causing death.

Butler said Stephanie Stahl of Wheeling died in the crash. Nicole Gray, also of Wheeling, remained in critical condition this morning.

The sheriff said Magistrate Patty Murphy set bond at $100,000 on the first charge and $250,000 on the second charge. Hatfield, who is not a local resident, remained lodged in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville at press time. His address was not available today.

A second fatal crash occurred around 4 a.m. today in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 about one-half mile east of Exit 11. Butler said an elderly couple from Pennsylvania were killed after their vehicle was struck head-on by a tractor trailer in the westbound lane of Interstate 70 near The Highlands.

“It looks like they (the couple) were trying to go back to Pennylvania and entered the highway traveling in the wrong direction,” Butler said.

The truck driver was not seriously injured. Both westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for several hours to allow crews to clear the wreckage and clean up diesel fuel spilled in the crash.

Several volunteer fire departments responded to the scene along with the sheriff’s department. The bodies were transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

The identities of the victims were not released this morning pending notification of relatives.
