Brooke County Men Charged in Heroin Death

WHEELING — The U.S. Attorney’s Office is looking to make an example of two Wellsburg men charged with allegedly delivering heroin that caused the death of a Follansbee man.

Curtis J. Adams, 28, and Justin A. Withers, 28, both of Wellsburg, are facing up to life in prison if convicted of causing the 22-year-old man’s death. The case was made federal when the men allegedly traveled to Steubenville to purchase the heroin and then back to Brooke County where it was distributed to the victim. The interstate travel charge would add another five years in prison.

During a press conference Monday, U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld said too many young people are dying of drug and heroin overdoses. Between 2003-10, in Hancock County, 46 people died of drug overdoses; 61 people in Brooke County; 65 in Ohio County; and 38 in Marshall County.

“Most of them are young people under the age of 30. Too many young people have died. … We need to send a message to the distributors,” he said. “Whenever we can prove who provided the drugs that caused a drug overdose death then we’re going to be very aggressive in prosecuting those who are responsible.”
