Rape Trial Day 3: Defendant’s DNA identified by BCI

STEUBENVILLE — Testimony continues this evening in the trial of two Steubenville High School athletes accused of raping a Weirton girl.

Three forensic scientists from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been called to the stand today. They testified about evidence that could link at least one of the defendants to the alleged crimes.

One BCI scientist said the bureau was able to identify sperm collected from a blanket the 17-year-old defendant and the victim were covered with at one point on the night of the incident. The DNA was identified as that of the 17-year-old male.

Testimony also indicated the BCI found a single sperm cell on the victim’s shorts, even though they had been washed since the night in question. The scientists could not, however, determine whose DNA that cell contained.
