Rape Trial Day 4: Defense Calls First Witness

STEUBENVILLE — The alleged victim in the Steubenville rape case told her former best friend that she did not remember having sex with either of the two defendants charged with raping her on Aug. 12, but that she wasn’t sure what happened in the early morning hours of that day.

The defense in the Steubenville rape trial called its first witness this morning, a 16-year-old girl who said she used to be best friends with the alleged victim in the case.

Judge Thomas Lipps allowed the defense to present the witness out of order, as the girl had been scheduled to testify Friday evening. The prosecution is expected to resume its case later today with the alleged victim possibly taking the stand.

Day 4 of the rape trial got under way shortly before 9 a.m.

The defense witness said she, another girl and the alleged victim were supposed to have a sleepover on Aug. 11 at a home in Steubenville across the street from where an end-of-summer party was taking place. The three girls went to the party and took alcohol with them, the witness testified.

The witness said the alleged victim became extremely intoxicated at the party, and that the victim refused to go back to the house across the street where they were supposed to stay, instead leaving the party with the defendants.

The witness also testified that she picked up the alleged victim the next morning at the house where the rape is alleged to have occurred.

Court is in recess until about 11:15 a.m.
