Rape Trial Day 4: Former Best Friend Testifies Against Alleged Victim
STEUBENVILLE — A second defense witness this morning in the Steubenville rape trial testified that the alleged victim was drinking heavily the night of Aug. 11-12, and that the witness also believed the alleged victim was flirting with one of the defendants charged with raping her.
Testimony in the trial’s fourth day has been slow today, with only two witnesses taking the stand, both for the defense. Court convened shortly before 9 a.m. The juvenile trial is expected to wrap up at some point this weekend.
The first witness of the day continued her testimony following a one-hour court recess. She said the victim frequently drank alcohol, and that the alleged events of Aug. 11-12 have strained their friendship.
The second witness testified that she has known the alleged victim since they were 3 years old. They also are no longer friends because of the alleged rape.
The second witness also testified that the alleged victim has a “reputation” for being untruthful, or not remembering events. On the night of Aug. 11, the witness testified that she watched the alleged victim consumer two beers and a number of shots of alcohol. She recalled seeing the alleged victim rolling around on the floor at the party.
Her testimony continues.
