Rape Trial Day 4: State and Defense Rest

STEUBENVILLE — Testimony has concluded in the trial of two high school athletes accused of rape.

The prosecution rested its case shortly after 7 p.m. today. Attorneys for the two defendants immediately followed suit without calling any additional witnesses.

Visiting Judge Thomas Lipps at about 7:20 p.m. was reviewing attorneys’ concerns regarding some of the evidence presented at the trial, which began in Jefferson County Juvenile Court on Wednesday. After those issues are resolved, the prosecution and defense will present their closing arguments.

The two boys allegedly raped a Weirton girl during a series of late-summer parties held in private homes in Steubenville. The alleged victim admitted she was intoxicated during the incident and has little recollection of the night in question. Multiple witnesses testified that they saw the boys engaged in sexual contact with the girl.

It is unclear whether Lipps will issue a ruling in the case today.
