Craft Fair To Help Charity

GLEN DALE – More than 42 crafters, artisans and vendors are signed up to participate this month in a craft fair in Glen Dale to help raise funds for the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling.

The craft fair, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 at St. Jude Hall in Glen Dale, is being coordinated by local crafter Davida Delgato, who is no stranger to the craft and art fair concept.

She said she has attended different craft shows all over the area for several years, enjoyed it and made a lot of friends.

“I’ve been doing craft shows as a vendor for a while now,” Delgato said. “A lot of the shows were put on, usually to raise funds for an organization or cause. I wanted to do the same.”

Delgato said she was inspired to help the Soup Kitchen because she had worked with them before through the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ on National Road. Once she got the idea, Delgato said she began to talk with friends she made over the years at different craft shows.

“Of course, they all said yes,” Delgato said in appreciation for her colleagues. Among vendors at the craft show will be jewelry makers, woodworkers, basketmakers, culinary specialists, bakers and several specialty vendors, including Pure Romance, Tupperware, Boyd’s Bears and Longaberger Baskets.

All vendor participants have to pay a registration fee to reserve their space for the show.

Delgato said she is currently working on setting up a bake sale among different restaurants, bakeries and private chefs.

Becky Shilling-Rodocker, executive director of the Soup Kitchen, said she is delighted with projects such as the craft show which help the Soup Kitchen survive and serve the Wheeling area.

“The Soup Kitchen is 100 percent community-funded,” Shilling-Rodocker said. “Each fundraiser in the community helps make it possible for us to serve three meals a day to those who need it. We’re really happy that they’re doing this.”

Raffle tickets will be available for prizes and Delgato said she will offer a 50/50 drawing.

The winners of these contests will be called, Delgato said, after the show is over.

“All proceeds from registration fees, the bake sale, the raffle and the 50/50 drawing will be donated to the Soup Kitchen,” Delgato said.

St. Jude Hall is located behind Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
