Man Shot To Death
STEUBENVILLE – Two early Wednesday shootings at separate homes in the city left one man dead and police investigating what appears to be a drive-by incident.
Derrick Williams, 18, of 1307 Orchard St. was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining a gunshot wound to the back of the head, according to Police Chief William McCafferty.
The chief said police were called at 3:22 a.m. after receiving reports that shots had been fired at 1124 Clair Ave. McCafferty said police arrived to find a body with a gunshot wound to the head.
“People said bullets were coming through the house,” McCafferty said. “The victim was struck in the back of the head.”
The chief said no one else at the residence was injured, and city police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were investigating the scene.
Police also responded at 4:02 a.m. Wednesday to reports that shots had been fired at 1317 Plum St. Police arrived to find 17 spent 7.62 mm casings from a rifle and seven spent pistol rounds. McCafferty said none of the four residents of the house was injured, and it’s still unclear what occurred.
McCafferty said motives for the shootings were unknown. He added BCI is involved in investigating the second shooting.
Detectives were still at the scene, McCafferty said later Wednesday.
