Former Police Chief to Go Free In Six Months

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Former Martins Ferry police chief Barry Carpenter could be a free man in six months.

Carpenter appeared Friday morning before Belmont County Common Pleas Judge John Solovan II seeking to have his sentence reduced. He originally had been sentenced in September 2011 to two years, eight months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of receiving stolen property.

Following a short hearing, Solovan granted Carpenter’s transfer to the East Ohio Corrections Center in Wintersville, where he will serve six months before being released. Following that, he will serve four and one-half years of probation.

Carpenter’s legal troubles were tied to the surrogate for actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband, Matthew Broderick. He was one of two area police chiefs that assisted in a plan to give information to reporters regarding the identity of a local woman serving as Parker’s surrogate, who gave birth to twins in 2009.
