Coal Miner Dies
CAMERON – A Consol Energy coal miner died on the way to the hospital Friday following a head injury sustained at the McElroy Mine in Marshall County.
According to Consol spokeswoman Lynn Seay, Roger King, 62, of Moundsville suffered “severe injuries” during an accident at 1 p.m. Friday, causing his death.
“Consol Energy notified federal and state mining officials and is working closely with them to determine the cause of the incident,” she said, adding operations at the mine stopped Friday.
Seay said McElroy operations should resume some time today.
The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training was investigating the situation Friday. Jesse Lawder, a spokesman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, said his agency was aware of the situation and an investigation was ongoing.
Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Cecil said local officials temporarily joined the investigation to ensure there was no criminal activity involved, which is standard procedure following industrial accidents.
The fatality is the sixth in the state this year.
