Home Invasion Prompts Search

WHEELING-A Wheeling Island woman was awakened this morning by an intruder she discovered stealing jewelry and cash from her bedroom.

The woman, who had been asleep in the living room, immediately called 911 as the burglar fled the home.

A Wheeling Police report issued at mid-morning states that multiple police units-including a K-9 – responded to a 7:58 a.m. call at the North Erie Street residence.

The victim described the intruder as a white male, about 30 years old, approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build and scruffy facial hair.

He was last seen wearing a gray or black toboggan cap, a gray zip-up hoodie sweatshirt, khaki cargo pants and carrying a tan messenger-style bag over his shoulder.

The victim told police the intruder had a “dirty” appearance.

According to the police report, the suspect fled south from the residence.

In addition to Wheeling officers, units from Bridgeport and Martins Ferry joined the search as reports indicated he may have escaped into Ohio via the now abandoned Aetnaville Bridge.

Anyone who may have seen the suspect is asked to call the Wheeling Police Department’s detective division at 304-234-3781.
