Early Morning Fire Destroys Two Homes

MOUNDSVILLE – A blaze that destroyed two homes at 16 and 18 Drummond St. in Moundsville early this morning remains under investigation, city Fire Chief Noel Clark said.

Crews from McMechen and Washington Lands assisted Moundsville firefighters in extinguishing the blaze that began about 4 a.m. Clark said everyone escaped the fires without injury, but noted both homes are total losses.

The fire began in one of the homes and quickly spread to the adjacent house. At this point, the cause is unknown.

“We’re pretty sure it started in the basement, but we’re not yet sure why,” Clark said. “It was fully engulfed when we got there.”

Clark said the Salvation Army is helping the displaced family with temporary shelter.

Neighbors could be seen looking over the charred remains about 9 a.m. today.
