Women’s Choice Award Goes to OVMC
WHEELING – Ohio Valley Medical Center has received the Women’s Choice Award, designating it as one of “America’s Best Breast Centers” by WomenCertified, an advocate organization for female consumers.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Michael Caruso, president and chief executive officer of OVMC and East Ohio Regional Hospital; radiation oncologist Dr. G.N. Reddy; medical oncologist Dr. Sushil Mehrotra; surgeon Dr. Robert Cross; surgeon Dr. Howard Shackelford; and radiologist Dr. Joseph Capito.
Caruso described the award as “unsolicited” by OVMC. The doctors said they were very pleased to receive the award, which is based on surveys of women who received care and the hospital’s records. The award also means the hospital met National Accreditation Program for Breast Center standards developed by the American College of Surgeons. The process took two years to complete.
“The NAPBC is a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and is dedicated to the improvement of quality care and outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast through evidence-based standards and patient and professional education,” Caruso said. “As one of American’s Best Breast Centers, Ohio Valley Medical Center also carries the seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and scored above average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures.”
Mehrothra said the award reflects the quality of care women receive at OVMC.
“We realize the real heroes are our patients,” Shackelford added.
Reddy stressed what makes the award significant is that it comes from the patients themselves.
“We showed up on their radar,” Reddy said of WomenCertified. “That’s even better.”
OVMC spokeswoman Laurie Labishak said a hospital could go to the Women’s Choice website to see if they qualify, but OVMC officials did not do that.
“We did not go looking for the award – they contacted us because we already met the criteria,” said Labishak, referring to the National Accreditation Program for Breast Center standards developed by the ACS.
