Help Us Honor Veterans

WHEELING – Over the past week, R. “Scat” Scatterday has fielded a number of phone calls from local veterans or their family members in response to a story in the April 20 Sunday News-Register about a special Memorial Day weekend concert in their honor.

After listening to the stories and just how special this type of honor will be for local veterans and their families, particularly those from World War II and the Korean War, Scatterday said it’s hard to keep the eyes dry.

“These guys gave so much, and for many of them, this will be the first time they’ve truly been honored,” Scatterday, himself a Vietnam War veteran, said.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is for all family members of World War II and Korean War veterans to call me so we can do our part to honor those who served.”

Scatterday can be reached by calling 304-233-1312.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register is partnering with Bordas & Bordas of Wheeling to present the special musical tribute to area veterans on Friday, May 23, as part of the 38th annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic.

The free event, set for 7:45 p.m. at Wheeling’s Heritage Port, will feature the 30-plus member Allegheny Brass Band playing patriotic songs. All veterans will be recognized during the event, and a special honor and recognition will be given to all World War II and Korean War veterans in attendance.

Scatterday, Ogden race director, said the public is invited and encouraged to attend to kick off the Memorial Day weekend of events. In fact, he said the concert is the perfect nightcap to the Friday events of the Ogden Half Marathon.

That day kicks off with the Veterans Torch Relay at 4:15 p.m., starting at the Osiris Shrine Temple in Elm Grove. At 6:45 p.m. is the Ohio Valley Parent Tiny Tot Trot, followed by the Ogden Fun Run at 7:15 p.m. The Ogden Mile starts at 7:30 p.m.

In prior years, downtown would clear out following the mile, but Scatterday believes the concert will change that.

“What better way to cap a Friday evening of great events than with a patriotic concert honoring our veterans,” Scatterday said. “This will be such a family-friendly event. I’m really looking forward to a great night.”

The Allegheny Brass Band, based near Pittsburgh, is one of the area’s top amateur brass bands. The band is a traditional British brass band that features flugelhorn, euphonium, tenor, and baritone horns as well as cornets, trombones, tubas and percussion.

On Saturday, May 24, the Half Marathon kicks off with the walk at 7:30 a.m. The runners start at 8 a.m., and the 5K events begin at 8:15 a.m. All participants are reminded that registration for the half marathon and associated events ends Friday, May 23. There will be no registration on race day.

Organizers of the 38th annual Ogden Half Marathon Classic have chosen to partner with the Wheeling FOP and the group’s annual Shop with a Cop program, marking the fifth year the Ogden race has donated its proceeds to a local charitable cause that benefits the region’s youth.

In previous years, race proceeds went to the Augusta Levy Learning Center, the Miracle Field of the Ohio Valley and the Howard Corcoran Scholarship Fund through the Super Six Committee.
