Island Man Shot in Face

WHEELING – An unidentified Wheeling Island man suffered a single gunshot wound to the head after multiple intruders burst into his 96 Maryland St. home.

Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said police responded to a call at 12:15 p.m. and, upon arrival, found a man in a second-floor bedroom with a gunshot wound to the left side of his face.

“He was responsive and talking to us before they transported him to Ohio Valley Medical Center,” Kimball said.

He said the victim’s daughter was in the home when the intruders entered and she witnessed the shooting.

“Multiple intruders burst into the home in a robbery attempt,” Kimball said. “We are making immediate progress and I am optimistic we will resolve this quickly.”

The witness was not injured in the attack, Kimball said.

Late Friday, Sgt. Gregg McKenzie said officers were still working to identify a suspect. He said the Friday afternoon Chase Bank robbery in downtown Wheeling “threw a kink” in the investigation.

“Nothing has gotten us to a point where I want to be just yet,” he said. “We did obtain information that will lead us in the right direction.”

McKenzie said he visited the victim in the hospital and gathered more information on the incident. He said the victim was cooperative and alert.

“He’s going to be OK,” McKenzie said. “It could have been a lot worse.

The shooting was unrelated to another report at about the same time Friday that sent police looking for a man with a gun in Elm Grove. Initial reports indicated the man was seen leaving a restaurant and running down National Road while waving a gun in the air.

“That report proved to be unfounded,” Kimball said.
