Infant’s Death Is Being Investigated

MOUNT PLEASANT -The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a month-and-a-half old infant, who was found unconscious in his parents’ bed Thursday morning.

County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said 911 was contacted at about 6:45 a.m. concerning the infant having a bloody nose and being unconscious.

The baby was taken to East Ohio Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Abdalla said the baby was taken to the Licking County coroner’s office. He said Belmont County uses that county’s coroner for autopsies.

Abdalla said the infant slept in the bed with the 20-year-old parents.

He said it appears one of the parents rolled over in their sleep and suffocated the child.

The sheriff said drug paraphernalia and powder residue, possibly from drugs, were found.

He said the powder residue was sent to a state crime lab for identification.

“We are still investigating it. We will wait until we have an autopsy report and then consult with the county prosecutor’s office,” Abdalla said.
