Mallett, Carder Remain in Office
WHEELING – Ohio County voters Tuesday returned two members to the Ohio County Board of Education, and elected a newcomer.
Board members Shane Mallett and Christine Carder received the most votes, while Tim Birch bested board president James Jorden by just 83 votes to win the third seat up for election.
Election night tallies were as follows: Mallett, 3,304 ; Carder, 2,828; Birch, 2,704; Jorden, 2,621; Sam Andy, 2,065; David Delk, 1,577; and Alex Coogan, 651. The results are unofficial until certified by canvass.
“I thank Ohio County voters, and am humbled to be the top vote-getter in the race,” Mallett said. “I am also thankful to everyone on the team who helped in getting me elected.”
Carder is a former principal at Wheeling Park High School.
“I am excited to still be serving the students of Ohio County, and that I now will be able to continue serving them,” she said.
Birch said Tuesday night he wasn’t certain what factor gave him victory in the election.
“I just want to thank everyone who did vote for me,” he said. “I’m thankful for their confidence, and I plan to work hard for them on the board of education. There are a lot of issues I want to address, and I know I’ve got some folks on the board who also want to address issues similar to mine.”
Birch said he likely will bring up the issue of staffing once he is a member of the board.
