McKinley, Gainer Vie in 1st District
WHEELING?- Tuesday’s primary election set up a November election contest for the House of Representatives seat representing West Virginia’s 1st District, which includes the Northern Panhandle. Incumbent U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., will face state Auditor Glen Gainer III.
Both McKinley and Gainer ran unopposed for their parties’ nominations in the primary on Tuesday. McKinley won the Republican nomination with 27,015 votes, according to unofficial returns. Gainer picked up the Democrat nomination, garnering 34,326 votes.
McKinley, of Wheeling, first was elected to Congress in 2011. Previously, he served as state House of Delegates member and as state chairman for the Republican Party.
Gainer, of Parkersburg, has served as state auditor since 1992.
