No Suspects in Wintersville Murder

WINTERSVILLE – A Mingo Junction man is dead today after a shooting Tuesday night at a village apartment complex.

The name of the victim had not been released by police this morning. Authorities are looking for the shooter and a motive, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.

Police received a call shortly before midnight Tuesday of shots being fired at the Ridgewood Place apartments, 601 Two Ridge Road. Police arrived to find a man dead from two gunshot wounds, Abdalla said.

“It appears two individuals walked up to the 22-year-old man,” the sheriff said, adding the man was presumably visiting his girlfriend at the apartment complex.

“One individual fired several shots, striking the victim twice. We’ve interviewed several people so far. At first we thought we had a suspect, but it turns out it wasn’t him. He has an ironclad alibi.”

Abdalla said police so far are stumped as to the motive or suspects.

“We haven’t got a clue at this time,” Abdalla said. “We’re hoping people at the (apartment complex) come forward with some information.”

The sheriff said agents from the Ohio Bureau of Investigation were investigating the shooting, and officers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Wintersville and Cross Creek police were on the scene.

“It’s just a senseless incident,” continued the sheriff. “We have no idea. The victim just has a new baby. He lived in Mingo, but had a female friend at the apartments.”

Abdalla said it was important witnesses come forward for their own safety.

“Anybody could become a target,” he said. “There was nothing accidental about this. When you have several shots fired, and no one says they saw anything? This kid was a target.”

Abdalla said anyone with information on the crime should call the sheriff’s department at 740-283-8600.
