Northern Panhandle Republicans to Honor Vets
WHEELING – Northern Panhandle Republicans will gather in Wheeling Saturday for a regional event to honor veterans on Armed Forces Day.
County Republican parties in Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler and Wetzel are collaborating to host a salute to the military, set for 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeling County Club.
Among those slated to speak are Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va.; Steven Bucci, director of the Heritage Foundation; and noted Hancock County war veteran John “Doc” Bahnsen.
The event is being organized by Ohio County GOP Chairwoman Patricia Levenson, who said she specifically planned the event to take place on Armed Forces Day.
“With all that’s been going on with our military … this is a way of demonstrating our support for the military,” Levenson said. “We want to do what we can to make sure they are appreciated for what they do for us.”
She said the GOP groups have been in charge with local veterans groups, and sponsors have been found to pay for some veterans to attend the event. A portion of the proceeds from the night will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project, with the remainder benefiting the GOP.
“We’re hoping to be able to do this on a yearly basis,” Levenson said. “It makes sense to come together and appreciate our military men and women.
“One of the great things about being a part of group like this is can bring in speakers you couldn’t have accessed as a single county. (An event by just one county GOP) would not have the effect an event with six counties would.
“This is just one of the ways we can service the region in easier fashion, more effectively,” she said.
