WHEELING – With about two and one-half hours left in the one-day Amazing Raise giving event, more than $362,000 had been pledged for area nonprofit organizations.

The fundraiser, which runs through 11:59 p.m., is an opportunity to donate to any of the 81 local nonprofit organizations and double their donations through matching funds from a national pool of money.

“I’m thrilled. I’m very excited,” said Susie Nelson, executive director of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley.

“I’m pleasantly surprised. The Ohio Valley is so generous. It’s surprising, but not.”

Donors have two ways to give: they can visit www.GiveOV.org and give to their favorite participating organization, with a minimum donation of $10. Donors also have the option of donating via check that must be dated May 6 and can be brought to the Community Foundation office at the Wheeling Chamber of Commerce Building, 1310 Market St. in downtown Wheeling, until 7 p.m. today.

There is no limit on the maximum donation. On the giving website at GiveOV.org, donors can search for a participating organization by name or by topic, Nelson said.

“Our goal for The Amazing Raise Ohio Valley is to reach new donors and show them how important it is to give to local causes. We want to use this opportunity to build a new generation of philanthropists for our community,” Nelson said.

Anyone interested in watching the action online can do so at www.GiveOV.org. The website also will have announcements about the winning organizations for the following prizes:

$5,000 to the organization that raises the most money

$2,500 to the organization that raises the second most money

$1,000 to the organization that raises the third most money

$1,000 Centennial Award, celebrating the 100th year of the first Community Foundation, will go to the organization receiving the 100th donation of the day

$1,000 1972 Award marking the year the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley was founded, to the organization receiving the 1,972nd donation
