Rally For Unemployment Benefits Is Set

WHEELING – A rally to urge Congress to extend unemployment benefits for all workers, including the 1,000 people impacted by the closure of Ormet Corp.’s aluminum smelter, is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Donnie Blatt, United Steelworkers District 1 rapid response coordinator, said the rally will be held at USW Local 5724’s hall, located at 105 Union Drive in Clarington.

Blatt said scheduled speakers include Jennifer Garrison, Democrat candidate for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, state Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, and state Rep. Jack Cera, D-Bellaire.

“Everyone thinks we don’t need it, but there are a lot people who lost their job through no fault of their own,” Blatt said. “There are millions around the country and at Ormet.”

Blatt said the rally is open to the public, not just former Ormet workers and their friends and family.

“Anybody can come and support us and call on Congress to extend unemployment benefits,” he said.
