Child Dies In Tyler House Fire

MIDDLEBOURNE – The Tyler County Sheriff’s Department and the state Fire Marshal continue investigating a blaze that left a child dead and three others injured early Monday.

Sheriff Bob Kendle said firefighters from Middlebourne, Alma and Shirley responded to the reported camper fire on Big Run Road near Alma shortly after 1 a.m. Monday. When they reached the fire, they found the camper completely engulfed in flames.

Kendle said witnesses at the scene alerted firefighters that they believed a child was trapped inside the burning camper.

After extinguishing the fire, emergency officials discovered the child’s body.

Witnesses told emergency responders that a man, woman and another child fled the scene to travel toward Pine Grove in search of help.

Kendle said once these people reached Pine Grove, emergency officials transported them to Wetzel County Hospital for treatment. Officials later took these victims to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh. Their conditions were unknown late Monday.

The names, ages or addresses of the victims were not available Monday.
