CADIZ – A house fire that broke out early on Wednesday morning claimed the lives of two young children and injured three adults.
The fire started at about 6:45 a.m. at 42009 on Upper Clearfork Road. Volunteer fire departments from Cadiz, Jewett and Scio responded. The victims, a boy and a girl whose ages were not provided, were transported to Harrison Community Hospital and later died from their injuries.
The children’s mother was flown to a Pittsburgh burn center. Two firefighters also were transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
“Some of the responders went in without gear, because they knew there were victims trapped,” Lorna Bower, director of the Emergency Management Agency, said.
Units from the office of the State Fire Marshal and a detective from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office were on scene for most of the afternoon investigating, but no findings on a cause have been released yet.
The home was destroyed by the fire.
A Critical Incidents Stress Debriefing (CISD) is planned for tonight. It will be a closed session meant only for first responders.
“There’s a trained team in Belmont County, and they’re coming over,” Bower said. “There are people trained to assist emergency response personnel with their feelings, and how they are going to cope with a situation like we had (Wednesday) morning with the fatalities.”
The names of the victims will be released later.
