Football Preview Kicks Off Season

WHEELING – High School football changes by the year. If there was a very large book encompassing the history of the game in the Ohio Valley, no two chapters would be the same.

That’s kind of the way we at The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register feel about the 47th annual edition of our preview, which can be found today inside this very newspaper. The names and the faces – both those doing the writing and those who are chronicled in the publication – have changed over the years, but our commitment never has, nor ever will.

The debut of this preview, the most comprehensive of its kind not only in the Ohio Valley but also the state of West Virginia, is highly anticipated each year by players, coaches, fans and even media members. We’re proud knowing that it serves not only as a family keepsake, but also a source of information that can be used as a point of reference at any point during the season.

Inside, readers will find complete previews, including rosters broken down by class, schedules and predictions, for all 48 football-playing schools in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. If you’re just a casual fan, chances are you will want to check out the composite season schedule to plan what games you want to attend ahead of time.

But that’s not all.

If college football is your preference, there’s plenty of that also. Not only are previews of West Virginia, Ohio State, Marshall, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Ohio University, West Liberty and Bethany included, but we’ve got the lowdown on the Mountain East Conference, as well as all five of the so-called ”Power Conferences.” In addition, there’s a breakdown of preseason Heisman Trophy candidates and a list of what figure to be the best TV-watching weeks of the NCAA season.
