Sheriff: Young Boy’s Drowning Death Appears To Be Accident

MOUNDSVILLE – The weekend drowning of a 2-year old in Marshall County appears to be an accident, but is still under investigation, according to Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Cecil.

The child was pronounced dead at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale on Saturday after falling into an above-ground pool. Police believe the child climbed the ladder and fell into the pool, which had a cover.

Cecil said his department is still collecting information and statements on the accident, but added it is still a sensitive time.

“We’re evaluating it,” Cecil said. “As emotional as it is right now, we’re giving it some space.”

A 911 call was received at 8:41 p.m. Saturday, with sheriff’s deputies, an ambulance and volunteer firefighters responding to the scene. People at the scene reportedly worked to revive the boy until medical personnel arrived.

Preliminary reports indicate that those involved worked for more than an hour to revive the child, who had been attending a birthday party at that location. Officials said there were many adults and children at the party.

Cecil said the victim celebrated his second birthday in July.
