Ohio Valley Communities Launch Flood Relief Efforts

WHEELING — The Most Rev. Michael J. Bransfield, bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, has approved a special collection to support recovery efforts related to the historic flooding that has struck 44 counties in West Virginia this week.

Parishes and missions in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston are asked to take a special second collection during all liturgies on the weekend of July 2-3, 2016. Proceeds from this collection will be used by Catholic Charities West Virginia to assist with long-term recovery efforts.

Bransfield also will preach about the West Virginia flooding during Mass at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling.

For those who wish to make a gift now, donors may contribute online to the Catholic Charities West Virginia Disaster Recovery Services Fund at www.catholiccharitieswv.org, which will support recovery efforts from the June floods. All funds will be used in West Virginia and distributed through the Catholic Charities West Virginia network.

Bransfield asks all West Virginians to remember in prayer the nearly two dozen victims of this tragedy, as well as all those who are injured and lost their homes and cars, employment, access to food and water and to those who remain without electricity or are stranded.

Youth Services System also will be taking donations for the flood victims from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at YSS headquarters, 87 15th Street in Wheeling. Call YSS during business hours at 304-233-9627 for more details.

Another community relief effort is taking place in Weirton. Donations will be collected at Weirton Fire Department headquarters, located behind the Mary H. Weir Public Library, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

Requested items include bottled or jugged water, non-perishable food items and cleaning supplies, including small brushes, hand soap and laundry detergent.
