With Tuesday Visit Nearing, Wheeling Mulls Trump Traffic

Headaches eyed ahead of visit by ‘The Donald’

WHEELING —  It’s sure to be a traffic headache in downtown Wheeling on Tuesday when presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump comes to WesBanco Arena, and local plans to handle the visit are still being determined, according to Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger.

“We haven’t gotten that far yet,” he said Friday afternoon.

Schwertfeger said members of his department met with Secret Service personnel on Friday morning to determine specifics for the event. Details such as which roads will be closed and at what times still are being formulated, and he expects these to be announced over the weekend.

Those with monthly parking passes at the WesBanco Arena parking lot, meanwhile, have been notified the lot will be closed both Monday and Tuesday, and they must park in the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center garage.

“We have been warned that any vehicles parked in the WesBanco Arena lot will be towed,” it states in the notice.

Robert E. Murray, chairman, president and CEO of Murray Energy, is slated to host a private fundraising event for Trump at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at WesBanco Arena. This event is by invitation only, and will not be open to the public or the media.

There has yet to be any announcement regarding any public event locally for Trump.

West Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Cole said he plans to be in Wheeling Tuesday for the Trump fundraiser.

“Trump is very popular in West Virginia,” he said. “I don’t know what coattails that might provide, but he carried 70 percent of the ticket (in the primary election). Some of that is probably anti-Hillary, but I do think it’s going to be a good year for Republicans.”
