Fuel Tanker Spill Contained in Belmont County

SHADYSIDE — A tanker truck driver lost control of his vehicle Wednesday morning in Shadyside, causing a minor fuel spill.

“A guy was driving a tandem-axle fuel truck hauling diesel fuel going down Kirkland Hill Road toward Pipe Creek Road,” said Jay Kovalo, president of the Ohio River & Western Fireman’s Association. “He was driving down the hill and lost control. From what we understand, something broke on the truck, but that has not been confirmed. Fuel spilled from one of the saddle bags on the side from the truck, not from the diesel fuel tank that he was delivering.”

Kovalo said almost 50 gallons of fuel spilled.

“The fuel did get into the runoff going toward the creek, but it did not make it all the way to the creek,” he said.

Kovalo said paramedics were dispatched to the scene at about 8:40 a.m., as well as the Belmont County Emergency Management Agency.

“(EMA) Director Dave Ivan helped out with the containment of the fuel. The EPA was notified, but luckily they didn’t need to come out because their requirements are for a spill of more than 50 gallons.” he said.

According to Kovalo, Bill’s Towing is certified in towing tankers with hazardous materials and is also certified for cleanups of hazardous material spills.

“They got everything cleaned up and towed the tanker, which was totaled. The driver is OK, but was taken to a local hospital to get checked out,” he said.

Kirkland Hill Road was closed for approximately 45 minutes after the accident while the spill was contained.

Kovalo advises drivers that “when you are driving on country roads that authorize heavy truck traffic, be extra cautious and more aware of your surroundings, especially around oil rigs.”
