Getting to Know Wheeling Council: Chad Thalman

CHAD THALMAN

Chad Thalman will replace longtime Councilwoman Gloria Delbrugge as the 1st Ward’s representative on council, representing Warwood, North Park and Glenwood. He also will serve as vice mayor.

Thalman was raised in Wheeling, graduating from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 2000. He attained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from West Virginia University in 2004, and received his master’s in business administration from Wheeling Jesuit University in 2009.

Thalman ran for office to make public safety a top priority, develop a city-wide beautification plan, assure public roadways are maintained and make budgetary decisions that yield the greatest economic result.

He currently works full-time for Warwood Armature on the company’s board of directors.

Q: What’s the last book you read?

Thalman: The last book I read was a business textbook from a class I was teaching at Wheeling Jesuit University this past semester. This was the first time I had taught this particular class, and I wanted to make sure I had read the same book that I expected the students to read.

Q: Other than Wheeling, what are some of your favorite cities, and what aspects of them do you find appealing?

Thalman: One of my favorite cities outside of Wheeling to visit is New York. I enjoy the energy of the city and the diversity of the people. I feel that regardless of the hour, New York is a city that always has something going on and is very much alive.

Q: Who were you in high school? What do you think of this person now?

Thalman: I’m sure I have grown as a person, learned a lot and matured, but in many ways I was probably very similar in high school to who I am now. I was probably a little quieter and reserved 20 years ago.

Q: You can play one song at your funeral. What is it? Why?

Thalman: Two of my favorite songs are “Band on the Run” and “Stairway to Heaven.” “Stairway to Heaven” seems more appropriate for a funeral.

Q: You studied psychology, and for a time used your degree as a social worker. Before this, what didn’t you realize about people?

A: Over the years, I’ve had the chance to study psychology and work with a lot of different people. If I was going to be brief and summarize what I have learned over the years, I would say that it’s important to treat people well, communicate effectively and hold people accountable. People are all unique in many ways, but also very similar to one another.
