Getting to Know Wheeling Council: David Palmer

DAVID PALMER

Like much of Wheeling, the 6th Ward has new representation on council, David Palmer takes over for former Vice Mayor Eugene Fahey in speaking for the residents of Elm Grove and a portion of Springdale. Palmer, a lifelong Wheeling resident, graduated from Wheeling Park High School in 1979 before attending the West Virginia State Police Academy. In 1986, he joined the Wheeling Fire Department and stayed for 26 years, retiring in 2012 as the chief fire investigator.

During his campaign, Palmer sought to address issues such as proper roadway maintenance, improvement of recreational facilities and property maintenance.

He currently serves as the associate director of the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley.

Q: What’s the last book you read?

Palmer: “Rogue Lawyer” by John Grisham.

Q: Favorite spot in Wheeling?

Palmer: My neighborhood in Patterson. At any one time, you can have baseball being played on three different fields, tennis games on the court, friends playing pickleball, kids at the playground, kayakers heading down to the “crick,” wedding receptions going on at the Italian American Club or fundraisers at the Elm Grove Civics. All this happening just outside your backyard! On other days, you can sit in your yard and enjoy the quiet when all you might hear are the birds singing. It is our “happy place.”

Q: Other than Wheeling, what are some of your favorite cities, and what aspects of them do you find appealing?

Palmer: I simply love the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where life slows down and there are no interstates or high-rise buildings.

Q: Who were you in high school? What do you think of this person now?

Palmer: I was the guy who loved to play sports and socialize. I am happy with the way this person turned out. I’m the same social person, only now I watch the sports.

Q: You can play one song at your funeral. What is it? Why?

Palmer: “Hotel California” by the Eagles. It’s a long song, and I’m sure I won’t be ready to go!
