Getting to Know Wheeling Council: Wendy Scatterday

WENDY SCATTERDAY

Wendy Scatterday is the 4th Ward’s new council representative. She’ll represent Morningside, Clator, Valley View, Leatherwood, Woodsdale, Greggsville, and Oglebay. Scatterday earned her bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee in 1995, and she became a registered architect with the West Virginia Board of Architects in 2000.

Scatterday ran for council to obtain expanded grant funding for the city, offer transparent and engaging communication and make efficient budgetary decisions. She defeated former Councilman David Miller in the May 10 election.

Scatterday is currently self-employed as an architect.

Q: What’s the last book you read?

Scatterday: “Scary Close” by Donald Miller.

Q: What makes a good conversation? Are they hard to find?

Scatterday: Willingness to be transparent about your thoughts and experiences is what makes a good conversation. They can be hard to come by as it requires each person to be brave and forthcoming. Not everyone is prepared to do that.

Q: Other than Wheeling, what are some of your favorite cities, and what aspects of them do you find appealing?

Scatterday: My favorite city is a place that is easily walkable and bikeable for every aspect of my daily life.  Being able to shop for groceries or household supplies, work, attend a cultural event, enjoy a restaurant or recreation activity without the use of a car is a true joy.  Greenville, S.C. and Paris, France are two such places among many near and far. Riding a bicycle down the streets of Paris alongside cars, buses and trucks felt safe and was a remarkable way to experience the place firsthand.

Q: Who were you in high school? What do you think of this person now?

Scatterday: I’m the same in terms of my relationships and leadership activities. I’ve always worked hard, treated people well, and continually reached for higher goals for myself and others around me.  I have no regrets and (have) left no opportunity unearthed.

Q: You can play one song at your funeral. What is it? Why?

Scatterday: “Beautiful Day” by U2. I’ll be in heaven, and I’ll not want people to mourn. The song is powerful and uplifting. It’s also my ringtone, the only one I’ve ever had.
